Chapter 05 - The Second Recording
The memory chip contained three files.
The first was Salvatore’s full confession.
He described every business, official, and account connected to the original Vale organization. He accepted responsibility for the harm he caused and named the families owed restitution.
The second file recorded Victor ordering a private doctor to alter Salvatore’s heart medication.
The third showed Daniel Cross receiving photographs of Sofia and Leo.
Adrian watched Cross point to the boy.
“The child activates the Carter account at age seven.”
Sofia looked confused.
Her birth name was Sofia Carter. Her father, Anthony Carter, had been Salvatore’s business partner before disappearing twenty years earlier.
The Carter account held thirty percent of Vale Holdings.
Salvatore placed the shares in a dormant trust after Anthony’s disappearance. The trust transferred to Anthony’s first grandchild at age seven.
Leo had turned seven three days earlier.
Victor needed Sofia’s key and Leo’s biometric signature to seize the account.
The boy was not only Adrian’s son.
He controlled the voting shares that could remove Victor from every legitimate company.
Adrian called an emergency board meeting for dawn.
Marcus warned that Victor controlled five directors and much of the hotel security.
“Then we do not meet at the hotel,” Adrian said.
Sofia objected.
“Victor will use Leo as leverage.”
“He already has.”
Adrian turned to his son.
“Leo, I need you to understand something. You own part of a company because adults hid papers before you were born. That does not mean you have to fix what they did.”
Leo held the toy car.
“Can I help stop the bad man?”
“You can tell us what you remember. Adults will do the stopping.”
Sofia watched Adrian carefully.
Powerful men had used the word protection to remove her choices for years.
Adrian gave the child information without handing him responsibility.
That mattered.
The board meeting was moved to Saint Michael’s Church, where Salvatore once negotiated peace between rival families.
Before they left, the hotel fire alarms activated.
