The Woman from the Empty Coffin

Chapter 02 - The Woman from the Empty Coffin

Adrian moved Sofia and Leo into the hotel’s presidential suite.

Two guards remained outside. A third swept the rooms for listening devices. Victor waited near the elevator, insisting the hotel belonged to Adrian and was therefore secure.

Sofia refused to enter until Victor left the floor.

Adrian studied her.

Eight years had changed the softness of her face. A faint scar crossed her left temple. Her hands trembled when the elevator doors opened.

“Victor has protected my family for thirty years,” Adrian said.

“He protected your family’s story.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only one I can give while he is listening.”

Adrian ordered Victor downstairs.

The older man smiled politely and obeyed.

Inside the suite, Leo sat on the carpet with a toy red car. He appeared more interested in its loose front wheel than in the gold furniture surrounding him.

Adrian remained standing.

“I watched the warehouse burn.”

“I was not inside when it started.”

“They found your necklace.”

“Victor took it from me.”

Sofia explained that she had been Adrian’s accountant before they became lovers. While reviewing hotel renovation invoices, she discovered payments to judges, police officers, and shell companies that did not exist.

She planned to tell Adrian.

Before she could, Victor summoned her to Warehouse Four and said Adrian wanted to meet privately.

Men took her phone, necklace, and identification. They locked her inside an office and set the ground floor on fire.

Sofia escaped through a loading window.

A federal agent named Daniel Cross found her on the highway. He placed her in witness protection after warning that someone inside the local task force worked for the Vale organization.

“Why didn’t you contact me?”

“I tried once.”

“What happened?”

“The safe house was attacked two hours later.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Sofia learned she was pregnant three weeks after disappearing. She chose silence because every route back to Adrian seemed controlled by Victor.

Leo rolled the toy car toward him.

“Mom said you didn’t know.”

Adrian knelt again.

“No. I didn’t.”

Sofia removed a small brass key from the car’s hollow wheel.

“I did not come back only because Leo deserves a father.”

Adrian took the key.

“What does it open?”

“Room 814.”

The Grand Meridian had no Room 814.

The eighth floor ended at 812.

But Adrian’s late father once kept a private suite behind the service wall.

A suite Victor claimed had been sealed after a flood.
