The Search for Amelia

Chapter 14 - The Search for Amelia
Crowne Medical Archives eventually produced a partial file for Marie Hale.
The patient arrived after the Saint Catherine’s fire with burns, smoke exposure, and no identification.
She repeatedly said her name was Amelia and asked for Daniel and Grace.
The attending physician changed her status after Evelyn presented a guardianship order.
Two weeks later, Marie Hale was transferred to a private coastal clinic.
The clinic had closed.
A former nurse remembered her.
Amelia lived for nearly a year after the fire.
She spent that year documenting patient names and sending messages through staff.
She died from complications unrelated to deliberate harm, according to the recovered medical record.
The evidence did not prove murder.
It proved confinement, isolation, and stolen time.
Daniel and Grace visited the coastal cemetery where Amelia had been buried under the false name.
The family restored her identity on the marker.
Grace placed the locket against the stone.
Then she put it back around her neck.
The object belonged to the living child, not the grave.
Daniel cried beside her.

Grace did not comfort him automatically.
They stood together without assigning either person responsibility for the other’s grief.
