The Daughter Who Officially Died

Chapter 02 - The Daughter Who Officially Died

Grace was taken to a private family room with a child advocate, a pediatric nurse, and Detective Lena Ortiz, who had been attending the wedding as a guest.

Daniel remained outside until Grace asked for him.

Vanessa insisted the child had been coached by someone trying to destroy the marriage.

Her mother, Judge Evelyn Crowne, demanded that security remove Grace before the press noticed.

Ortiz refused.

The locket photograph was old but genuine. The paper, ink, and damage matched items recovered from Saint Catherine’s after the fire.

Grace said she had lived with a woman named Anna Reed until six months earlier.

Anna never claimed to be her biological mother.

“She said my real mother was Amelia,” Grace explained. “She said Amelia made her promise to keep me hidden.”

Then Anna disappeared.

Grace entered a private children’s residence called Rosewood House. Staff changed her surname from Hartwell to Carter and told her never to discuss the fire.

Three days before the wedding, an elderly nurse gave Grace the locket, bus fare, and the address of Hartwell Grand.

“She said I had to reach Daniel before he married Vanessa.”

Daniel asked why.

Grace looked at him.

“Because after the wedding, they could move me somewhere no one knew my name.”

The memory key contained an encrypted birth record.

Grace Hartwell had survived the hospital fire.

Her official death certificate had been filed forty-two minutes before firefighters reached the maternity wing.

It was signed by Dr. Paul Mercer.

The witness approving the infant’s transfer was Evelyn Crowne.

Daniel stared at the names.

Vanessa’s mother had been involved in Grace’s case years before Daniel ever met Vanessa.
