The Archive Beneath the Chapel

Chapter 08 - The Archive Beneath the Chapel
Amelia’s video mentioned a chapel bell.
Saint Catherine’s Hospital had been demolished, but its small memorial chapel remained.
The bell mechanism contained a sealed compartment.
Inside were original maternity logs, security photographs, and copies of guardianship petitions.
Amelia had hidden them before the fire.
The records showed that Dr. Mercer and Evelyn Crowne ran a network connecting the hospital, Rosewood House, and private adoption attorneys.
Newborns were assigned according to family wealth and trust value.
Some adoptions may have placed children in caring homes.
That did not make the stolen identities lawful.
Grace’s file carried a red mark.

Amelia’s refusal disrupted the transfer.
The fire destroyed the public records office while the hidden copies survived.
A second document revealed that Amelia had been admitted to Lakeshore Neurological Center after the fire under the name Marie Hale.
The center closed five years earlier.
Patient records were transferred to Crowne Medical Archives.
Victor controlled the archive.
By the time investigators arrived, several boxes were missing.
A clerk had photographed the removal order.
Vanessa signed it six months before the wedding.
She said Evelyn told her the boxes contained sensitive donor information.
Again, she claimed limited knowledge.
Again, her signature moved evidence out of reach.
