Daniel’s Silence

Chapter 09 - Daniel’s Silence

News outlets described Daniel as the groom who discovered his lost daughter moments before marriage.

The story made him sound rescued by fate.

He rejected it.

At a public hearing, Daniel admitted that warning signs had existed.

Amelia questioned the hospital records before the fire.

Anna sent two letters through Hartwell attorneys.

A Rosewood teacher once requested a meeting about a child resembling Daniel’s family.

Victor dismissed each concern.

Daniel accepted the summaries.

He had built hotels and clinics by moving quickly. Full files felt inefficient.

After Grace’s death declaration, he avoided maternity cases because they triggered grief.

Crowne Family Services used that avoidance as protection.

“I did not create the false record,” he said. “I allowed other people to become the only voices explaining it.”

He resigned as temporary chair of the Hartwell Trust.

The board urged him to remain for stability.

He refused automatic control but agreed to cooperate with an independent administrator.

Grace watched part of the hearing through a private feed.

Later, she asked Daniel why he had stopped looking.

He did not say he thought she was dead.

She already knew.

“I believed official papers because continuing to doubt them hurt too much.”

Grace looked down.

“Did it stop hurting?”

“No.”

“Then you should have kept looking.”

Daniel accepted the answer.
