Rosewood House

Chapter 06 - Rosewood House
State investigators entered Rosewood House under warrant.
The public rooms looked cheerful.
Children’s drawings covered the walls. Donor plaques praised the Crowne family.
Behind the administration office was a locked records suite.
Inside were duplicate birth certificates, adoption orders, and billing files under children’s names.
Grace appeared under four identities.
One record called her deceased.
Another listed her as receiving therapy in another state.
A third charged the Hartwell Trust for private schooling she never attended.
The fourth placed her at Rosewood as an abandoned child.
The facility had collected money from every version.
Investigators found Nurse Anna Reed’s name in the visitor logs.
She had visited Grace secretly for years.
Six months earlier, staff discovered who she was.
Victor Shaw obtained an emergency guardianship order calling Anna delusional and dangerous.
She was transferred to Briar Haven Recovery Center.
No one told Grace.
A Rosewood teacher named Rosa Martinez preserved Anna’s final letter.
It said:
GRACE, YOUR FATHER DID NOT ABANDON YOU. HE WAS GIVEN A DEATH CERTIFICATE BEFORE HE WAS GIVEN A CHANCE TO SEARCH.
Daniel read the sentence alone.
He had searched for six months after the fire.
Then Evelyn, serving as the family’s legal adviser, told him continuing would damage his mental health and the trust’s reputation.

He stopped.
Grace had been alive less than twenty miles away.
