The Mop on the Marble Floor

Chapter 01 - The Mop on the Marble Floor

The mop slipped from ten-year-old Emma Reed’s hands and struck the marble with a heavy crack.

Water spread beneath the crystal chandelier of Blackwood Manor.

Emma stared at her fingers. They were red from gripping the wooden handle too tightly, but she did not complain. Complaining had never changed anything.

Across the room, head housekeeper Beatrice Voss sat in a velvet chair eating sliced pears from a porcelain bowl.

“You missed the corner again,” Beatrice said.

Emma bent to pick up the mop.

“I’m sorry.”

“You should be grateful Mrs. Blackwood allows you to stay here.”

Emma knew there was no Mrs. Blackwood. The mansion belonged to billionaire investor Adrian Blackwood, who spent most of the year traveling between hospitals and technology companies.

Beatrice told everyone Emma was the orphaned daughter of a former employee. She said the child received food, schooling, and shelter in exchange for light household duties.

But Emma had not attended school in six months.

She cleaned before sunrise, carried laundry between three floors, and slept in a narrow room beside the furnace.

What Beatrice did not know was that a small camera had been hidden inside the antique clock above the fireplace.

The camera belonged to Adrian.

He was sitting inside a black sedan three miles away when his phone displayed the live feed.

At first, he thought the system had opened the wrong room.

Then he saw Emma struggling to lift the heavy mop.

He saw Beatrice remain seated.

And he saw the silver locket hanging from Emma’s neck.

Adrian leaned toward the screen.

His younger sister, Lillian, had worn the same locket the night she disappeared eleven years earlier.

He enlarged the image.

The engraving was unmistakable: a tiny blackwood tree beneath a crescent moon.

Adrian called his security chief.

“Turn the car around.”

“Sir, the airport meeting—”

“Cancel it.”

The sedan accelerated toward the estate.

Inside the mansion, Emma lifted the mop again.

Beatrice pointed toward the staircase.

“After this floor, clean the west gallery.”

A deep engine sounded outside.

Then another.

Beatrice set down her bowl.

The front doors opened.

Adrian Blackwood entered with two security officers behind him.

He looked first at the mop.

Then at Emma.

Finally, he looked at Beatrice.

“Why,” he asked quietly, “is a child cleaning my house?”
