The Sound in the Great Hall

Chapter 20 - The Sound in the Great Hall

Ten years after the mop fell, Emma returned to Blackwood Manor as a university student studying education law.

A training session filled the great hall.

Teachers, social workers, auditors, and foster advocates stood where Beatrice once sat eating pears.

The marble floor still reflected the chandelier.

Emma carried the old mop from the archive.

She set it gently on the floor.

The sound echoed.

Everyone turned.

“When I was ten,” she said, “that sound meant I had failed to hold something too heavy for me.”

She explained how adults ignored missed school, false records, locked rooms, and unpaid labor because each detail looked too small alone.

“The camera did not save me,” she said. “A person watching finally decided the image required action.”

Lillian sat near the front.

Adrian stood at the back, no longer the center of the room.

After the session, a young trainee asked Emma whether she hated the mansion.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Buildings don’t decide who matters.”

Emma returned the mop to its case.

A group of schoolchildren entered for a tour. They crossed the marble hall carrying notebooks and asking loud questions.

No one told them to be silent.

No child wore a servant’s uniform.

No locked office controlled the charity records.

Outside, a blue truck delivered new library books.

Emma opened the first box.

Inside was a science book like the one she had tried to study beside the furnace.

She placed it in a child’s hands.

The great hall filled with voices.

Years earlier, the crash of a mop had revealed a hidden child.

Now the same room existed to make sure no child had to create that sound before an adult paid attention.
