The Hospital Beneath the Hospital

Chapter 10 - The Hospital Beneath the Hospital

The unfinished hospital stood behind chain-link fencing and faded charity banners.

Police entered through the loading dock.

The upper floors contained empty rooms built for cameras and donors.

The basement contained patients.

Some were former employees, foster contractors, and witnesses kept dependent on medication or false legal guardianships.

Lillian was in a records room attempting to copy files when police found her.

She looked older than forty, with silver beginning near her temples and a scar along her forehead.

She asked one question.

“Where is Emma?”

Adrian answered.

“Safe.”

Lillian studied him.

“With whom?”

“A court-appointed advocate. Not with me unless she chooses.”

Some tension left her face.

At the estate, mother and daughter met in the garden rather than the mansion.

Emma stood beneath the blackwood tree holding the locket.

Lillian stopped several feet away.

“I remember you,” Emma said.

“You were a baby.”

“I remember your song.”

Lillian began humming.

Emma crossed the distance.

They held each other beneath the tree while Adrian watched from the terrace.

No one photographed them.

No one turned reunion into proof of corporate redemption.

Later, Emma asked why Lillian had not come sooner.

“I was afraid every door led back to Charles.”

“Even Uncle Adrian?”

“Especially him.”

Adrian accepted the answer.

Trust could not be demanded simply because he had finally chosen correctly.
