Beatrice’s Explanation

Chapter 12 - Beatrice’s Explanation

Beatrice requested a meeting with Lillian before trial.

Lillian agreed only with attorneys present.

Beatrice said Charles threatened her family when she first discovered the fake accounts.

Over time, fear became salary, authority, and comfort.

She told herself Emma was safer inside the mansion than in foster care.

Lillian asked one question.

“Did she need to clean the marble?”

Beatrice looked down.

“No.”

“Then stop hiding cruelty inside necessity.”

Beatrice admitted intercepting school letters, searching Emma’s room, and reporting the child’s behavior to Charles.

She had never physically struck Emma.

Her defense emphasized this.

Lillian replied that harm did not require a bruise.

Taking school, sleep, freedom, and identity was enough.

Beatrice offered information about a final offshore account.

It held money intended for hospital construction.

Her cooperation reduced the potential sentence, but did not erase the charges.

Emma chose not to meet her.

The adults respected the decision.

She owed no one access to her emotions.
