The Housekeeper’s Memory

Chapter 10 - The Housekeeper’s Memory

Mrs. Alvarez remembered the baby at the gate.

She remembered because Elena had wrapped him in a blue blanket despite the heat. She remembered because the infant had Jonathan’s eyes. She remembered because Edward stood on the other side of the intercom and said, “If she comes inside, you lose your job.”

At the time, Mrs. Alvarez had three children, one sick husband, and no savings. Fear made a coward of her, and she had lived long enough to stop making excuses for it.

Now she stood at the mansion door and told Caleb the truth.

“Your mother did not ask for money,” she said. “She asked for Jonathan’s attorney. She said your father left instructions. Mr. Edward said she was lying.”

Edward’s face was stone.

Caleb looked at him. “I was a baby.”

Edward said nothing.

“A baby,” Caleb repeated, voice lower.

Marcus stepped slightly closer, not to interrupt, only to remind him he was not alone.

Mrs. Alvarez wiped her eyes. “Elena looked at the house once before she left. I think she knew she would never be allowed back.”

Caleb swallowed hard.

His mother had carried him away from his own front door.

The thought made the mansion blur.

Edward finally spoke. “Sentiment does not transfer title.”

Marcus responded immediately. “No. The trust does.”

He turned to Caleb. “The estate staff has been notified by my firm. Edward is no longer authorized to remove documents, transfer assets, or order personnel on the property without legal oversight.”

Edward laughed in disbelief. “You think a laborer can run this estate?”

Caleb looked down at his dirty boots on the stone driveway.

Then up at the cream facade.

“No,” he said. “But I know how to fix what rich men neglect.”

For the first time, Mrs. Alvarez smiled.
