What The House Held

Chapter 17 - What The House Held

The house held more than furniture.

It held ledgers. Photographs. Staff records. Letters from Jonathan never sent. Elena’s old employment file with notes written in Edward’s hand. A private memo questioning “possible inheritance complications.” A legal draft naming Caleb before he was born.

Every room answered another question.

Some answers healed.

Most cut.

Caleb spent the first week sleeping in the guesthouse because the master bedroom felt obscene and Jonathan’s room felt haunted. Marcus advised caution. Mrs. Alvarez advised soup. Caleb accepted both.

He walked the property at dawn before gardeners arrived. Palms shifted in the marine layer. The stone driveway held faint tire marks where the Rolls-Royce had stopped, where Edward had shoved him, where everything changed under harsh sunlight.

He did not quit his job immediately.

His supervisor laughed when Caleb asked for two weeks’ leave to deal with “family legal matters.” Then Marcus called. The leave was approved in six minutes.

That made Caleb angry in a new way.

Not at getting help.

At how quickly people behaved once power stood behind him.

He returned to the mansion and asked Mrs. Alvarez to gather the staff.

They stood in the foyer uncertainly.

Caleb wore a clean shirt but the same tan work boots.

“I don’t know how to run this place,” he said. “You do. No one loses a job because my uncle lied. But if anyone helped him hurt my mother or hide me, tell Marcus now before the house tells him later.”

Silence.

Then an old groundskeeper stepped forward.

“I saw your mother at the gate,” he said.

The house kept speaking.

Caleb listened.
