The Front Door Opens

Chapter 07 - The Front Door Opens
The mansion front door opened.
For one dangerous second, Marcus lifted his free hand, warning everyone not to move. But no hidden villain emerged. No dramatic crowd. Only Mrs. Alvarez, the elderly housekeeper who had first let Caleb onto the property, stood in the doorway with one hand pressed to her mouth.
She had worked there for thirty years.
She had known Elena.
Edward snapped, “Go inside.”
Mrs. Alvarez did not move.
Marcus looked at her. “Mrs. Alvarez, did you know Jonathan Whitmore had a child?”
Her eyes filled.
Edward’s face darkened. “You are staff. You will not speak.”
That word—staff—landed differently now.
Caleb thought of his mother carrying trays through rooms that might someday belong to her son, never allowed to say so. He thought of Mrs. Alvarez’s hand trembling at the door.
“Let her speak,” Caleb said.
Edward turned slowly.
It was the first order Caleb had ever given inside the boundary of the estate.
Mrs. Alvarez stepped onto the threshold. “Jonathan loved Elena,” she said. “He was going to leave papers. He told me. Then the accident happened.”
Edward laughed. “Memory is cheap.”
Marcus said, “Fortunately, we have more than memory.”
Mrs. Alvarez looked at Caleb. “Your mother came once when you were a baby. She stood at the gate. Mr. Edward sent security. I should have helped her. I have prayed about that day ever since.”
Caleb’s chest tightened.
He did not know what to do with apologies from people who had been afraid.
Not yet.
Edward pointed toward the house. “Inside. Now.”
Mrs. Alvarez looked at Caleb instead.
“May I stay, sir?”
Sir.
The word nearly broke him.
May you like
Caleb nodded once.
Edward heard the future in that nod and hated it.
