The Driveway Audience

Chapter 13 - The Driveway Audience

People had begun watching from beyond the gate.

Not a crowd. Not yet. A gardener from the neighboring estate. A delivery driver paused too long at the curb. A woman walking a small white dog pretending the dog had chosen that exact spot for deep contemplation. Beverly Hills loved privacy until scandal made it decorative.

Edward saw them and straightened.

His public face tried to return.

“We will discuss this inside,” he said.

“No,” Marcus replied. “We will document the transition outside until my team arrives.”

“You are humiliating me.”

Caleb looked at him.

The sentence landed strangely after the shove, the scratch, the insult, the decades of hidden inheritance. Edward’s humiliation had lasted minutes. Elena’s had lasted a lifetime.

“You moved my mother’s life outside the gate,” Caleb said. “You can survive a driveway.”

Mrs. Alvarez turned away, but Caleb saw her shoulders shake. Maybe from grief. Maybe from laughter. Maybe both.

Edward’s eyes darkened. “You think this makes you one of us?”

Caleb looked down at his gray T-shirt, dusty pants, tan boots.

“No.”

That surprised Edward.

Caleb continued. “I think being one of you was the problem.”

Marcus’s mouth twitched.

At the gate, the Rolls-Royce driver spoke quietly into his phone. The car remained parked, rear passenger door still open. The cream legal envelope stayed in Marcus’s right hand. The mansion front door remained open, framing the foyer where the phone vibrated and went still again.

Nothing reset.

Nothing disappeared.

The scene held.

And for the first time, Edward could not edit it.
