The Phone On The Console

Chapter 11 - The Phone On The Console
Inside the foyer, a phone sat on the console table by the door.
Edward kept glancing toward it.
Caleb noticed because men who repair broken things learn to notice where pressure escapes. A pipe whistles before it bursts. A motor heats before it fails. A liar looks toward the next tool before he uses it.
“Expecting a call?” Caleb asked.
Edward sneered. “Do not speak to me like we are equals.”
Marcus followed Caleb’s gaze through the open front door. The small phone remained on the console table, screen dark, no readable text. Mrs. Alvarez looked at it too, then back at Edward.
“He called Mr. Langford when the young man arrived,” she said.
Edward snapped, “Enough.”
Marcus’s expression sharpened. “Langford, the private security contractor?”
Edward said nothing.
Caleb understood only part of it. Enough to feel danger return.
Marcus turned to the driver near the Rolls-Royce. “Contact my office. We may need local law enforcement present before Mr. Edward makes another mistake.”
The driver nodded and moved carefully, not using the mansion phone.
Edward’s rage broke through the polished surface. “You come here in a rented suit and think a dead servant’s son can steal my life?”
Caleb stepped closer.
“Say my mother’s name.”
Edward blinked.
“What?”
“Her name was Elena Ward. Say it.”
The demand was quiet. That made it impossible to dismiss.
Edward’s mouth tightened. He would not.
Caleb nodded once, as if confirming something.
“You lived in her silence so long you forgot it belonged to a person.”
Marcus lifted the cream envelope between them.
“Silence is over.”

From inside the foyer, the phone began vibrating on the console table.
No one moved to answer it.
