Edward’s Last Threat

Chapter 16 - Edward’s Last Threat

Edward made his last threat at sunset.

By then, the legal team had secured records, the staff had been notified, and Marcus had arranged temporary oversight of the estate. Caleb had not claimed a bedroom. He had not opened drawers. He moved through the mansion like someone visiting a museum of a life stolen before he could inherit it.

Edward waited in the driveway, refusing to leave until forced.

When Caleb stepped outside, Edward rose from the stone bench.

“You will lose this,” he said.

Caleb stopped.

Marcus moved closer, but Caleb lifted one hand.

Edward smiled thinly. “You think documents make you powerful. They make you a target. This house has lawyers older than your entire education.”

Caleb considered that.

Then he said, “My mother beat them by dying prepared.”

Edward’s smile faded.

“And I learned from her,” Caleb continued. “So threaten me again if you want. But understand something: I grew up with nothing you could take that mattered more than her name.”

Edward’s face hardened.

“You are not Jonathan.”

“No,” Caleb said. “I’m Elena’s son too.”

That did it.

Not because Edward respected Elena.

Because he realized Caleb did.

Marcus stepped forward. “Mr. Edward Whitmore, your attorney has been contacted. You are to leave the property pending formal proceedings.”

The Rolls-Royce remained parked behind them, rear door now closed after being clearly shut by the driver. Another car waited at the gate for Edward.

Edward looked at the mansion one last time.

Then at Caleb.

“This house will ruin you.”

May you like

Caleb looked at the cream stone facade glowing in the low sun.

“Maybe,” he said. “But it’s going to tell the truth first.”
