The First Order

Chapter 12 - The First Order

Caleb’s first order as legal heir was not dramatic.

He did not demand Edward be thrown out. He did not stride into the mansion like a prince in work boots. He did not ask for keys, safe codes, or champagne. He looked at Mrs. Alvarez standing in the doorway with tears on her face and said, “Could someone bring water?”

She laughed once through a sob.

“Yes, sir.”

Edward looked disgusted. “This is pathetic.”

“No,” Marcus said. “It is leadership without theater.”

Caleb almost smiled despite everything.

Mrs. Alvarez returned with a glass of water. Caleb took it, then handed it to Edward.

Edward stared.

“I don’t want your charity.”

“It’s not charity,” Caleb said. “You look like you might faint, and I don’t want you pretending I pushed you.”

Marcus coughed once to hide a laugh.

Edward took the water only because refusing proved Caleb’s point.

The absurdity of it steadied Caleb. The mansion was still huge. The legal truth still unreal. His father remained dead. His mother remained gone. But Edward, who had seemed monstrous minutes earlier, now stood sweating in the sun with a glass he did not want, exposed by paperwork and a poor man’s courtesy.

Power shifted in strange ways.

Marcus leaned toward Caleb. “We should enter only after the property inventory team arrives.”

Caleb nodded.

Edward snapped, “You need permission to enter your own house now?”

Caleb looked at the front door.

His own house.

The words did not fit yet.

“My mother waited twenty-four years,” he said. “I can wait twenty more minutes and do it right.”

May you like

Marcus nodded with approval.

Edward hated that too.
