The Accident

Chapter 09 - The Accident
Jonathan Whitmore died in a car accident on Mulholland Drive.
That was the official version.
A curve taken too fast. A sports car overcorrecting. Wealth, grief, and speed making a tragedy the public could understand quickly and forget respectfully. Edward had inherited mourning, power, and temporary control of the estate in the same season.
Marcus Bell did not accuse him of murder on the driveway.
Truth that large required more than sunlight and anger.
But he said enough.
“Your mother never accepted the accident report,” Marcus told Caleb.
Edward’s eyes sharpened. “Careful.”
Marcus looked at him calmly. “I am.”
Caleb gripped the photograph. “What does that mean?”
“It means Elena kept records. Phone calls. dates. witnesses. She believed Jonathan was meeting an attorney the next morning to alter the estate structure publicly.”
Edward’s expensive watch flashed as his fist closed.
“Speculation.”
“Possibly,” Marcus said. “That part remains under review.”
Caleb looked from one man to the other. The mansion, which had seemed like an absurd inheritance moments ago, became something darker: not a prize, but a crime scene with palm trees.
“My father was going to claim me,” he said.
Mrs. Alvarez answered softly from the doorway. “Yes.”
The simplicity of it devastated him.
All those years wondering if he had been unwanted. All those birthdays his mother stared too long at a candle before smiling. All those nights Caleb told himself fathers who disappeared were cowards or strangers or lies.
Jonathan had been coming.
Someone had stopped him.
Edward lifted his chin. “You cannot prove anything beyond paperwork.”
Marcus held up the sealed documents.
“Then you should be relieved,” he said.
Edward was not relieved.
May you like
Caleb saw that.
So did everyone else.
