The Heir On The Driveway / Chapter 6 / 19

The Scratch On His Cheek

Chapter 06 - The Scratch On His Cheek

The red scratch on Caleb’s cheek came from the morning before.

He had been fixing a delivery gate behind a hotel kitchen when a rusted bracket snapped loose and caught his face. His supervisor offered a bandage and docked him twenty minutes for washing up too long. Caleb laughed because anger would cost more than pride.

Now the scratch burned under the California sun.

Edward kept glancing at it.

Not with guilt.

With calculation.

“Look at him,” Edward said suddenly, turning toward Marcus as if the attorney were a negotiable audience. “Does this look like Jonathan’s heir? He arrives dirty, with no education worthy of the Whitmore name, no preparation, no understanding of what this estate requires.”

Caleb felt each phrase strike old places.

No education worthy.

Dirty.

Unprepared.

The language of men who mistake inherited polish for character.

Marcus did not blink. “Jonathan’s trust did not require a navy suit. It required bloodline, identity, and the preservation of the estate against fraudulent occupation.”

Edward’s jaw tightened. “Fraudulent?”

Marcus raised the envelope slightly. “Your occupancy has been legally conditional since your brother’s death.”

“That is not possible.”

“It is inconvenient. That is different.”

Caleb almost laughed. It came out as a breath.

Edward turned on him. “You find this amusing?”

“No,” Caleb said. “I find it late.”

The attorney looked at him.

Caleb touched his scratched cheek.

“My mother worked until her hands swelled. She skipped medicine so I could eat. If this house was mine, then every year you spent here was bought with her pain.”

The words surprised him by arriving whole.

Edward had no answer ready.

Good.

For once, he was the man scrambling for balance.

The same way Caleb had after the shove.
