Crossing The Threshold

Chapter 15 - Crossing The Threshold

Caleb crossed the threshold at 1:42 p.m.

The exact time mattered to Marcus, who documented everything. It mattered to Mrs. Alvarez, who cried openly when Caleb stepped through the tall front door. It mattered to Caleb because his mother had once stood outside with him in her arms and been denied entry.

He paused on the marble foyer.

Cool air touched his skin. The black staircase railing curved upward. Sunlight spilled through glass and painted the floor in pale shapes. Somewhere inside, the mansion hummed with systems that had run for decades without knowing his name.

Caleb looked down at his dirty boots.

A small part of him wanted to remove them, as if poverty might stain the marble.

Then he remembered Edward’s shove.

He kept the boots on.

Mrs. Alvarez stepped forward. “Would you like me to show you the rooms?”

Caleb looked at the staircase. “Was my father’s portrait upstairs?”

“Yes.”

“Show me that first.”

They climbed slowly. Marcus followed at a respectful distance. Edward remained outside with the legal team. For once, he could not lead the tour of stolen history.

Jonathan’s portrait hung in the upstairs hall.

Caleb stopped before it.

The resemblance was undeniable.

Same eyes. Same brow. Same hint of stubbornness around the mouth.

Caleb had spent years searching for his father in strangers, in silence, in the parts of himself his mother would not explain. Now the man stared back from a frame paid for by people who erased his child.

“I don’t know what to feel,” Caleb whispered.

Mrs. Alvarez answered softly, “Then feel one thing at a time.”

Caleb nodded.

First: grief.

May you like

Second: anger.

Third, smaller but real: arrival.
