Richard Caldwell’s Offer

Chapter 10 - Richard Caldwell’s Offer
Richard requested a meeting at the state courthouse.
He arrived without his judge’s robe.
For the first time, he looked like an elderly man rather than an institution.
He offered to resign, release Willow Street, and repay part of the stolen money if Claire withdrew support for criminal charges against Nathan and Victoria.
“The town cannot survive a scandal of this size,” he said.
Margaret placed the red ledger on the table.
“The town has survived your family.”
Richard warned that Caldwell Regional Hospital might close.
The bank could fail.
Hundreds could lose jobs.
Claire recognized the strategy.
Make the victim responsible for the consequences of exposing the offender.
She asked Richard whether the hospital’s financial problems came from patient care.
He did not answer.
Ortiz supplied the audit.
Millions had gone into private estates, political campaigns, and offshore accounts.

It was failing because the Caldwells had treated it as a private wallet.
Claire rejected the offer.
Richard looked at Margaret.
“You raised a stubborn daughter.”
Margaret answered, “Her father and I raised a daughter who can say no.”
Richard’s face hardened.
