Nathan’s Trial

Chapter 12 - Nathan’s Trial

Nathan faced charges for coercive control, fraud, unlawful restraint, falsifying medical records, and conspiracy.

His attorneys presented photographs of a loving marriage.

Vacations.

Anniversary dinners.

A nursery prepared in pale green.

Claire did not deny that some happy moments were real.

“That is why I stayed long enough to doubt myself,” she said.

The jury heard the brooch recording.

They saw the nursery footage.

They read the forged trust transfers and psychiatric notes.

Nathan testified that he only wanted to protect Claire from stress.

The prosecutor asked why protection required a locked door and a false signature.

He had no answer.

Nathan blamed Richard and Victoria.

Then prosecutors played a recording of him telling his father:

“Once the baby is born, we can keep Claire in treatment until the trust settles.”

The sentence ended his claim that everything was temporary.

Nathan was convicted on most charges.

At sentencing, he looked toward Claire.

“I loved you.”

She replied through her victim statement:

“You loved access to me. Love would have allowed me to remain a person.”

The court issued a long-term protective order.

Any future contact regarding the child would require professional review and Claire’s consent.
