The Judge’s Daughter

Chapter 07 - The Judge’s Daughter
Victoria Caldwell requested a private meeting with Ortiz.
Her attorney insisted on immunity.
Ortiz refused.
Victoria offered evidence anyway.
She had helped prepare Claire’s medical record and guardianship petition. Richard told her the Ellis Trust rightfully belonged to the Caldwell family because he helped finance its first properties.
Victoria believed Claire had manipulated Nathan into marriage and planned to remove the Caldwells from the housing business.
Over time, belief became convenience.
Then fear.
Richard controlled Victoria’s accounts, law license, and position at the hospital board. When she objected to the plan against Claire, he reminded her that several forged medical entries carried her login.
He had made his children partners before allowing them to become witnesses.
Victoria provided access to a hidden county server.
The server contained draft rulings in guardianship cases not yet heard.
Judge Richard Caldwell had written decisions before evidence was presented.
Some transferred homes to companies tied to his family.
Others declared elderly residents or injured workers incapable after they rejected development offers.
Claire’s petition already had an approval order waiting.
The signature field was blank, but the ruling was complete.
Victoria asked whether cooperation would protect her career.
Ortiz replied, “It may affect sentencing. It will not preserve a career built through fraud.”
Victoria cried.
Margaret felt no satisfaction.
The Caldwell children had benefited enormously.
They had also grown inside a family where obedience and survival became difficult to separate.
