The Sheriff at the Door

Chapter 08 - The Sheriff at the Door
Sheriff Paul Mercer arrived at Saint Anne’s Hospital with two deputies.
He carried a county warrant accusing Claire of assaulting Nathan and stealing trust documents.
Ortiz examined it.
Richard Caldwell had signed the warrant before state investigators released the nursery footage.
Mercer demanded custody.
The hospital refused.
State police arrived within minutes.
Mercer raised his voice.
“This county handles its own affairs.”
Claire heard him from her room and began shaking.
Margaret stood beside the door.
“No one enters without her consent.”
Mercer laughed.
“You think being her mother gives you authority over law?”
“No. Her being an adult gives her authority over herself.”
Ortiz obtained an emergency stay from the state court.
The county warrant was suspended.
Mercer was ordered to surrender communications related to the Caldwell case.
His phone contained messages from Nathan.
BRING HER BACK BEFORE THE STATE GETS THE MEDICAL FILE.
Another message came from Richard.
USE THE ASSAULT VERSION. THE OTHER STORY IS DEAD.
Mercer had not investigated anything.
He had selected a prepared narrative.
State investigators arrested him for obstruction and conspiracy.
The deputies stepped away from him.
One later admitted that officers had questioned Caldwell orders for years but feared losing jobs, pensions, and housing.
Bellweather did not belong to the Caldwells because everyone supported them.
May you like
It belonged to them because too many people believed resistance had to happen alone.
That belief was beginning to break.
