The Family That Owned Bellweather

Chapter 02 - The Family That Owned Bellweather

The Caldwell family name appeared everywhere.

Caldwell Regional Hospital.

Caldwell Savings Bank.

Caldwell Courthouse Annex.

Even the youth shelter carried a bronze plaque honoring Nathan’s father, Judge Richard Caldwell.

Richard entered Margaret’s cottage without knocking.

He was sixty-eight, silver-haired, and still wore the controlled expression of a man accustomed to entire rooms standing when he arrived.

Two private security officers waited outside.

Richard looked at Claire.

“You frightened everyone.”

Claire sat upright against the headboard.

“I asked Nathan to stop.”

Nathan answered quickly.

“She had a panic episode.”

Margaret raised the recorder brooch higher on her blouse.

Richard noticed.

His eyes narrowed.

“What is that?”

“A gift from my husband.”

Victoria moved toward Margaret.

The brooch emitted a sharp tone.

Margaret had pressed the emergency transmit button.

Outside, tires sounded on the gravel road.

District Attorney Lena Ortiz arrived with a state investigator and a female paramedic. She had avoided the county sheriff because Sheriff Paul Mercer owed his last campaign to the Caldwells.

Richard’s expression remained calm.

“This is a domestic misunderstanding.”

Ortiz looked toward the bedroom.

“A pregnant woman said no. Four people entered the home to remove her.”

“She requires medical care.”

“Then the patient chooses the hospital.”

Claire asked to be taken outside Bellweather County.

The paramedic helped her into the ambulance.

Nathan attempted to follow.

Claire refused.

For the first time, the refusal had witnesses.

Ortiz preserved the audio recording and photographed the marks with Claire’s consent. She also collected a leather medical folder Nathan had carried into the house.

Inside was an unsigned emergency guardianship petition declaring Claire mentally incapable during pregnancy.

Nathan had planned to take her home and file it before sunrise.

The doctor supporting the petition was from Caldwell Regional Hospital.

The proposed guardian was Victoria.

Margaret looked at the family surrounding her tiny cottage.

“They didn’t come to help her.”

May you like

Ortiz closed the folder.

“No. They came to remove her legal voice.”
