The Baby Without a Deed

Chapter 15 - The Baby Without a Deed

Claire gave birth two months later at Saint Anne’s.

Margaret stayed beside her.

Nathan was not present.

A court-approved process would determine whether any future contact was safe.

Claire named her daughter Hope David Ellis.

Hope for what survived.

David for the grandfather whose ledger protected strangers he would never meet.

Ellis because Claire wanted the child connected to a history without making her responsible for owning it.

The birth triggered no property transfer.

The residents had already activated the cooperative.

No lawyer waited outside the delivery room.

No bank officer watched the clock.

Hope arrived as a baby, not a key.

Margaret held her granddaughter and remembered the marks beneath the blanket, the men in her cottage, and Richard’s certainty that the town would always repeat his version.

She whispered, “You own nothing except your own life.”

May you like

Claire smiled.

“That is enough.”
