Willow Street

Chapter 05 - Willow Street

Willow Street Apartments housed forty-two families.

Most worked in Bellweather’s hospital, courthouse, schools, or food-processing plant.

The Ellis Trust had kept rents stable for thirty years.

After Caldwell Development took control, the company announced a luxury conversion. Residents received notices giving them thirty days to leave.

Nathan told Claire the project would increase the trust’s value.

The transfer documents showed something else.

Caldwell Development purchased the building from the trust for one dollar, then used the property as collateral for a twenty-million-dollar private loan.

Claire’s forged signature approved the sale.

Margaret visited Willow Street with Ortiz.

Residents gathered in the laundry room because it was the only common space large enough.

A nurse named Rosa Martinez had received an eviction notice while caring for her disabled father.

A retired teacher named Samuel Price had lived there since 1989.

He carried a folder of repair requests ignored by Caldwell management.

Margaret realized the scheme was larger than her daughter’s marriage.

The Caldwells used family control to reach the trust, then used the trust to displace people whose complaints local officials could dismiss.

Samuel handed Margaret an old photograph.

It showed David Ellis beside a young Richard Caldwell at the opening of Willow Street.

On the back, David had written:

WE BUILT THIS TO REMAIN PUBLIC. IF RICHARD CHANGES HIS MIND, THE RED LEDGER PREVAILS.

Margaret had never heard of a red ledger.

Richard Caldwell had.

That was why his family wanted Claire legally silent before the baby arrived.

David had tied the trust’s final protection to his first grandchild.
