Margaret’s Brooch

Chapter 17 - Margaret’s Brooch
The recording brooch became famous after the trial.
News programs called it “the pin that defeated Bellweather’s ruling family.”
Margaret disliked the phrase.
“A device recorded sound,” she said. “People still had to believe my daughter.”
She donated the brooch to the county archive only after Claire approved.
The display included the emergency guardianship petition, the red ledger, and a copy of the nursery footage timeline.
No photographs of Claire’s body were shown.
Her pain was evidence, not public decoration.
The archive label read:
TRUTH LEFT THE ROOM BEFORE POWER COULD CLOSE THE DOOR.
Schools began teaching the case in civic classes.
Students learned how local institutions could become dependent on one family and how independent records, outside courts, workers, and residents broke the pattern.
Margaret continued living in the same cottage.
She refused offers for a larger house.
