The Baby Monitor at Caldwell Manor

Chapter 04 - The Baby Monitor at Caldwell Manor

A state judge approved a search warrant after Ortiz presented the recording and guardianship petition.

Sheriff Mercer attempted to block the search.

He claimed state investigators lacked authority.

Ortiz showed him the signed order.

For twenty years, Caldwell influence had turned local permission into a wall. This time the warrant came from outside the county.

Investigators entered Caldwell Manor at dawn.

The nursery looked untouched: white crib, pale green walls, silver mobile, and an expensive baby monitor mounted above the changing table.

Beneath the monitor was a hidden storage compartment.

Inside were draft police statements, medical declarations, and a small external drive.

The drive contained recordings from inside the manor.

Nathan had installed cameras to document Claire’s “episodes.”

Instead, the footage showed him controlling her medication, taking her phone, and pressuring her to sign property transfers.

Victoria appeared in several clips rehearsing what Claire should say to doctors.

Richard appeared once.

“If she resists,” he said, “the pregnancy gives us a clean incompetency argument.”

No one mentioned Claire’s wellbeing.

They discussed her as a legal obstacle.

The nursery camera also captured the evening before she fled.

Claire discovered a transfer involving the Willow Street building. Nathan blocked the door when she tried to leave.

The camera angle did not show every movement.

It showed enough.

Claire’s voice said, “Let go of me.”

Nathan answered, “Sign first.”

Then came the sound of something falling.

Minutes later, Claire escaped through the garden.

The family’s own surveillance system had preserved the truth they planned to edit.
