The First Lawsuit

Chapter 12 - The First Lawsuit

The first major lawsuit came from the family of Aaron Bell.

Aaron died in a highway collision two years earlier. His vehicle’s side airbag failed. Dealership records showed the recall repair had been completed by a technician who denied touching the car.

The Bell family had settled with the manufacturer after Rowan Motor Group certified the repair.

Now the certification was proven false.

Claire met Aaron’s widow, Julia, with no company publicist present.

Julia placed a photograph of Aaron on the table.

“He was not a liability estimate.”

Claire nodded.

The company admitted fault before trial.

Insurers threatened to cancel coverage. Investors demanded a confidential settlement. Julia refused silence.

The agreement became public and included compensation, scholarship support for Aaron’s children, and funding for independent recall verification.

Claire did not ask Julia to praise the company’s transparency.

Honesty after exposure was not heroism.

It was the minimum remaining duty.

Dozens of other claims followed.

Some were weak.

Some were devastating.

All were reviewed independently.

The company sold luxury real estate and executive aircraft to fund repairs and settlements. The black Meridian coupe remained because investigators still needed its archive.

Derek watched assets disappear.

He had once measured success through visible wealth.

Now each sale translated into a family receiving acknowledgment.

He offered to surrender his personal trust account.

Mara accepted only through court supervision.

“Guilt does not give you control over restitution either,” she told him.

He began to understand that even punishment could become performance if designed by the person seeking redemption.
