The Silver Watch

Chapter 18 - The Silver Watch
The silver watch stopped working on Claire’s thirty-fifth birthday.
Technicians offered to rebuild it.
She refused at first.
Its purpose had been fulfilled.
Then Mia, now a teenager in the cooperative’s engineering program, asked whether dead tools should remain dead simply because their first job ended.
Claire heard Elias in the question.
The students repaired the watch together. They removed the founder override so it could never again grant one person unilateral control. Instead, it became a rotating authentication device for the public safety archive.
Every month, a different elected representative carried it.
A mechanic.
A customer.
An engineer.
A disability advocate.
A student observer.
The watch no longer proved inheritance.
It proved shared custody of evidence.
Claire wore it one final day before the first rotation. She stood beside Meridian in the same parking space where Derek fired her.
The dealership looked different now.
No private executive entrance.
No hidden compliance office.
No family portraits.
She checked the time and smiled.
Not because ownership was about to transfer.

Because it already had.
From one family to many hands.
