The Watch Handshake

Chapter 04 - The Watch Handshake

Claire sat inside Meridian and placed both hands on the steering wheel.

The leather still carried the shallow scratches left by Elias’s wedding ring during testing. A silver compass emblem rested at the center. She touched it with her thumb.

The watch vibrated.

“Identity confirmed,” the car said.

Derek stood outside the windshield, shouting through the glass.

The cabin muted him automatically.

A hidden panel opened beneath the center console. Inside were a small data module and a folded paper sealed in plastic.

Claire recognized her father’s handwriting.

Claire,

If this system has activated, either I kept my promise or I failed to come home. The watch does not make you worthy. It proves only that I trusted you to ask better questions than the people who wanted control.

Her vision blurred.

She continued reading.

Meridian mirrors every safety record because a company should never be able to delete the evidence of what it knew. Use it carefully. Truth can protect people, but power always tries to turn truth into property.

Claire pressed the data module into the console port.

The dashboard displayed a protected audit menu. Recall alterations appeared by date, user, dealership, and payment route.

Derek’s credentials appeared repeatedly.

So did Graham Vale’s.

The founder system had not merely recorded the fraud.

It had preserved the original maintenance data before each alteration.

Outside, Derek struck the roof with his palm.

Claire lowered the window two inches.

“Open the showroom,” he demanded.

“You no longer have building authority.”

“My family owns this company.”

“Your family managed shares held in trust.”

He laughed, but his face had gone pale.

Claire held up her phone. A message from attorney Mara Keene confirmed the transfer.

ROWAN FAMILY TRUST CONTROL RESTORED, 5:00 P.M.

“The board vote was recorded fifteen minutes ago,” Claire said. “Your father’s authority is suspended pending audit.”

Derek looked toward the employees behind the glass.

For years, he had taught them that ownership and obedience were the same thing.

Now neither answered him.
