The Crash Elias Predicted

Chapter 07 - The Crash Elias Predicted

The Meridian archive held data from the night Elias died.

Claire had searched for it in every company server. Investigators claimed the prototype network had been destroyed in the crash.

They were wrong.

Meridian had received a mirror transmission nine minutes before Elias’s vehicle left the test track.

The file showed a remote diagnostic command disabling the collision-warning fail-safe. The command originated from an executive service account controlled by Graham’s office.

It did not prove Graham pressed the button.

It proved his system did.

Elias had also recorded a voice memo.

If the fail-safe changes again without my authorization, freeze the Vale accounts. Graham says the shortcut is temporary. Safety shortcuts have a way of becoming funerals.

Claire listened inside the showroom conference room with Mara and federal investigators.

Her father’s voice had aged less than her memory.

Graham denied sabotage. He claimed an engineer used his credentials to speed testing. He said Elias drove despite warnings and caused his own death through impatience.

Samuel Ortiz interrupted.

“I was on the test team.”

He had remained silent for eleven years because Graham threatened to revoke his immigration sponsorship and accuse him of tampering.

Samuel described seeing Derek, then a college intern, carry Graham’s laptop into the control room. Derek said his father needed a software update installed before the test.

Derek’s face emptied.

“I didn’t know what it did.”

Samuel believed him.

But Derek had spent the following years helping Graham erase the evidence without asking what began the secrecy.

Claire looked at the man who mocked her in the parking lot.

He had not caused the crash knowingly.

He had inherited the silence and protected it because the company rewarded him.

Derek sat down.

For the first time, arrogance had nowhere useful to go.
