The Dealership Changes Its Name

Chapter 14 - The Dealership Changes Its Name
The old Rowan name returned for one day.
Workers raised silver letters above the showroom while cameras recorded. Claire watched from the parking lot and felt no triumph.
A name could honor history.
It could also restore family mythology too quickly.
At the first public board meeting, she proposed a permanent change.
The company became Compass Mobility Cooperative.
The Rowan trust transferred part of its ownership to employees and a customer-safety foundation. No family name appeared above the doors.
Some investors called the change an insult to Elias.
Claire read from his letter.
Ownership smaller than truth.
The motion passed.
The showroom wall displayed a timeline including Graham’s crimes, Derek’s role, Evelyn’s coerced signatures, the fake recall program, Aaron Bell, Elena Ruiz, and the technicians who warned management.
History was not cleaned.
Meridian moved into a glass workshop where students could study its safety architecture. Visitors could see the silver compass emblem, but not touch the evidence module.
Derek attended the renaming from the back row.
Nobody introduced him.
That was appropriate.
Afterward, he approached Claire in the parking lot.
“I’m sorry I gave you the key like that.”
Claire looked at him.
“The key was not the worst thing you did.”
“I know.”
He did not ask forgiveness.
He handed her a list of customers he remembered management pressuring into silence.
It was incomplete.
May you like
It was useful.
Claire accepted it.
