The Recall Nobody Sent

Chapter 03 - The Recall Nobody Sent
The investigation began with a child’s car seat.
A young mother named Elena Ruiz brought her crossover into the dealership after the passenger airbag warning appeared. The service computer showed the vehicle had already received a manufacturer recall repair.
Elena insisted it had not.
Claire opened the physical service record.
The technician signature belonged to Marcus Hill, who had been dead for eight months.
She checked another vehicle.
Then another.
Hundreds of recall repairs had been marked complete without work being performed. The dealership collected manufacturer reimbursement while unsafe cars returned to the road.
Claire reported the pattern to Derek.
He told her the database contained migration errors.
She requested an independent audit.
Her access was restricted that afternoon.
Then a former technician slipped an envelope beneath her office door. Inside were photographs of unrepaired airbag modules being moved between cars long enough to pass digital inspection. The same module had been used to certify dozens of vehicles.
The fraud reached multiple dealerships.
At the center was Vale Automotive Services, a contractor owned by Graham’s brother-in-law.
Claire copied the records to a secure drive and notified federal transportation investigators. She also informed the board that she would preserve the Meridian prototype because its internal server mirrored service-network changes.
Derek responded by accusing her of stealing company information.
He scheduled a disciplinary meeting for Friday.
By noon, security had packed her office.
At 4:45, he walked her through the showroom while employees watched.
He could have dismissed her privately.
He wanted humiliation.
Outside, he pointed toward Meridian and said she should move it away from the customer entrance before leaving.
Derek believed the prototype was merely an old promotional car.
He did not know it had recorded every fraudulent service authorization routed through the founder network.

He did not know the watch could unlock those records.
And he did not know the company was seconds away from changing hands.
