Derek Starts At The Bottom

Chapter 16 - Derek Starts At The Bottom
Derek lost his executive license, dealership certifications, and access to the Vale family accounts.
He moved into a small apartment and began working at a nonprofit transportation-safety office as an unpaid records assistant. His job was to scan complaints from families whose cars had failed after dealerships denied repairs.
Nobody cared who his father was.
Nobody watched his apologies.
For six months, he organized files.
He learned the names of people hidden inside statistics.
A delivery driver injured by steering failure.
A teacher whose brakes locked near a school.
A grandfather blamed for a software malfunction.
Aaron Bell.
Derek requested permission to attend technical training. The cooperative allowed it under supervision but barred him from management.
He entered the service bay wearing plain work clothes.
Samuel handed him a torque wrench.
“You know how to use this?”
“No.”
“Good. Honesty saves time.”
Derek began as an apprentice.
He made mistakes.
He listened.
He stopped pretending questions were weakness.
Years later, he earned a basic technician certification. He never returned to executive authority.
At a public meeting, someone asked Claire whether Derek had been redeemed.
“That is not a title I issue,” she said.
Derek heard.

He agreed.
Change was work, not a verdict.
