Emma’s Place at the Table

Chapter 17 - Emma’s Place at the Table

The foundation offered Emma a senior investigative position.

She declined at first.

She feared accepting power through family connection to Lydia.

The employee board encouraged her to apply through the normal process.

She completed interviews beside other candidates and earned a role in household medical-safety review.

Her job involved visiting homes where health technology operated under private guardianship.

She learned that opening a door once did not make her an expert in every situation.

Sometimes safety required immediate entry.

Sometimes it required legal support, patient advocates, or quiet planning.

Emma trained staff not to become reckless heroes.

“Do not confuse urgency with ownership of someone else’s crisis.”

She kept the yellow dress.

The center requested it for display.

She refused.

“It was clothing, not evidence.”

Years later, she wore it to Lydia’s first birthday picnic.

Daniel noticed the color and smiled sadly.

The dress had become famous in public retellings.
