The Bed That Remembered

Chapter 02 - The Bed That Remembered
Daniel called emergency services and refused to let anyone remove the tablet or medical patch.
A paramedic examined Clara while Emma opened the windows. Clara’s breathing steadied, and the baby’s heartbeat remained strong.
Eleanor insisted the sedative came from Clara’s prescription.
Dr. Maya Chen, the independent physician who arrived with the ambulance, checked the medication history.
Clara had no such prescription.
The air sample contained a vaporized sleep compound used only in Whitmore Rest Laboratories’ private neurological trials.
Daniel stared at his mother.
Their family company manufactured smart beds, migraine devices, and sleep-monitoring systems for hospitals around the world.
Eleanor chaired its medical foundation.
She knew exactly what the compound could do.
The bed’s emergency archive held six hours of audio and sensor records.
Daniel played the first file.
Eleanor’s voice came through the speakers.
“Keep her asleep until Victor arrives. We need the biometric confirmation before Daniel comes home.”
Family attorney Victor Shaw answered.
“The pregnancy makes the incapacity petition easier. We can say stress caused the episode.”
Another recording captured Clara waking and refusing to place her thumb on the tablet.
Eleanor told her that Daniel had approved the transfer.
Clara said, “He would never give you my mother’s shares.”
Then came the sound Emma heard from the hallway.
Clara striking the bed frame for help.
Daniel stopped the playback.
His face had become frighteningly still.
Eleanor tried to leave.
Detective Lena Ortiz entered with two officers.
The sleep system’s independent safety server had automatically alerted state regulators when it detected an unauthorized compound and a blocked emergency call.
Eleanor’s own company had designed the safeguard after a patient died during an early trial.
She believed the private house had been disconnected from it.
She was wrong.
Ortiz secured the records.
The tablet displayed the title:
EMERGENCY MEDICAL GUARDIANSHIP AND TEMPORARY VOTING TRANSFER.
Clara’s biometric approval would have moved forty-two percent of Whitmore Rest Technologies into Eleanor’s control.
Daniel looked at the woman who raised him.
“You used our bedroom as a clinic.”
May you like
Eleanor answered without shame.
“I used it to protect everything your wife was about to destroy.”
