The Shares Beneath Clara’s Name

Chapter 03 - The Shares Beneath Clara’s Name

Clara Reed Whitmore had never considered herself wealthy.

Her mother, Lydia Reed, worked as an engineer at Whitmore Rest before disappearing eighteen years earlier. Clara was told Lydia died during a laboratory explosion.

A modest insurance payment supported Clara through school.

She became a respiratory therapist, met Daniel during a hospital technology audit, and married him three years later.

Only after the wedding did Clara learn that Lydia had been more than an employee.

She co-created the company’s first noninvasive sleep-monitoring system with Daniel’s father, Thomas Whitmore.

The original partnership agreement gave Lydia forty-two percent of the patents and voting rights.

After her supposed death, Eleanor transferred those rights into the Whitmore family holding company.

Thomas objected.

He created a corrective trust before his own death.

If Lydia or her direct heir appeared with proof of identity, the shares would return to that branch of the family.

If Clara had a child, the shares would enter a permanent patient-and-employee trust at the baby’s birth.

No individual heir would own them privately again.

Clara’s due date was seven weeks away.

Eleanor had seven weeks to stop the transfer.

She began by calling Clara anxious.

Then unstable.

Then medically confused.

Victor Shaw prepared reports from doctors Clara had never met. Her concerns about company trials became symptoms in a psychiatric file.

Daniel had seen summaries of those reports.

He had accepted Eleanor’s explanation that pregnancy intensified Clara’s fear.

When Clara asked him to investigate the trust, he told her they would discuss it after London.

He left her inside the house controlled by the person she feared.

In the hospital, Clara woke and saw Daniel beside the bed.

“Did she get the signature?”

“No.”

“Did you know about the petition?”

“No.”

She watched him carefully.

“Did you know she was building a medical record against me?”

Daniel could not lie.

“I knew she had concerns.”

“You knew enough to ask questions.”

He lowered his eyes.

Not creating the plan did not make him innocent of every condition that allowed it.
