Little Lydia Asks About the Door

Chapter 19 - Little Lydia Asks About the Door
When Lydia Emma was nine, she visited the center inside Whitmore House.
She knew the simplified family story.
Grandmother Lydia had invented a smart bed.
Grandmother Eleanor had used it to do something wrong.
Emma had heard an alarm.
Her mother had been found safely.
The child stood in the corridor outside the master bedroom.
“Is this the door?”
“Yes,” Clara said.
“Why didn’t everyone open it?”
“They were told not to.”
“By one person?”
“Yes.”
Little Lydia frowned.
“That’s not a very good reason.”
Clara smiled.
“It can feel like one when the person controls your job, home, or family.”
Inside the room, the child examined the blue emergency light.
“Did the bed save you?”
“It recorded what was happening. Emma opened the door. Doctors helped. Investigators preserved the record. Many people had to choose what came next.”
Lydia looked at Emma.
“Were you scared?”
“Very.”
“You still went in.”
“I had enough reason to believe someone needed help.”
The child took Clara’s hand.

She did not ask to hear the recording.
The family had decided that truth did not require passing every frightening detail to the next generation.
