Daniel Reads His Father’s Letter

Chapter 07 - Daniel Reads His Father’s Letter
Inside the Night House ledger was a sealed letter addressed to Daniel.
Thomas wrote it six months before his death.
He admitted that he discovered Lydia’s confinement too late.
He had spent years accepting Eleanor’s explanations because exposing the truth would threaten the company, pensions, hospitals, and Daniel’s future.
He called that reasoning cowardice disguised as responsibility.
Thomas created the patient-and-employee trust because no family should control medical technology capable of turning bedrooms into private institutions.
He also warned Daniel.
“Your mother does not believe she is cruel. She believes ownership makes every act necessary.”
Daniel read the sentence twice.
He remembered childhood nights when Eleanor entered his room without knocking, changed his school, dismissed friends, and explained every decision as protection.
Her control had felt like competence.
Clara’s resistance felt disorderly by comparison.
Daniel had married a woman who asked direct questions.
Then he left her alone whenever those questions threatened family peace.
He released the letter to investigators and opened the company’s internal servers without waiting for a subpoena.
The first review found thousands of altered sleep reports.
Patients’ nighttime movements were labeled psychiatric events whenever families needed guardianship evidence.
Employee pension money funded Haven Ridge and the Night House.
Whitmore Rest had sold safety while privately profiting from control.
The board asked Daniel to remain chief executive during the crisis.
He refused.
“A company built around one family’s judgment cannot be repaired by another member of that family asking for trust.”
An independent administrator took over.

Daniel lost authority before he knew whether Clara would allow him back into their home.
For the first time, consequences arrived without his mother negotiating them away.
