Emma’s Yellow Dress

Chapter 04 - Emma’s Yellow Dress
Emma Reed had arrived at Whitmore House only three weeks earlier.
She wore a yellow dress instead of a traditional uniform because Clara had asked the household staff to stop dressing like invisible servants during daytime family events.
Eleanor hated the change.
She hated Emma more after learning her surname.
Emma was Lydia Reed’s niece.
Her father, Lydia’s younger brother, had spent years searching for evidence that his sister survived the laboratory explosion.
He died believing the Whitmores had erased her.
Emma accepted the household position after receiving an anonymous envelope containing a photograph of Lydia inside a private medical facility.
The photograph was dated four months earlier.
On the back, someone had written:
THE MASTER BED KNOWS WHERE SHE IS.
Emma assumed the message referred to hidden files inside Whitmore House.
She did not know the bed itself maintained an independent adverse-event archive.
Clara knew Emma was related to Lydia but kept the information from Eleanor until they could verify the photograph.
That morning, Clara planned to show Daniel the evidence when he returned from London.
Eleanor discovered the envelope first.
She ordered staff away, moved Clara into the master bedroom, and attempted to obtain biometric consent while the sedative weakened her.
Emma entered because the ventilation warning confirmed the room was being used for something beyond a migraine.
Detective Ortiz examined the photograph.
The facility logo belonged to Haven Ridge Neurological Center, a private clinic funded by the Whitmore Medical Foundation.
Public records listed no Lydia Reed.
A patient identified as L-42 occupied a restricted cottage.
The number matched Lydia’s original ownership percentage.
Daniel called the clinic.
The administrator claimed Patient L-42 had been transferred that morning.
Destination unknown.
