The Night House
Chapter 06 - The Night House
Police entered the abandoned research hotel with firefighters, medical advocates, and structural engineers.
The lobby smelled of dust and old cedar.
Dozens of prototype beds remained beneath white covers.
In the basement, the original sleep laboratory was still receiving electricity.
Lydia sat inside a glass observation room.
She wore a pale blue cardigan and held a photograph of Clara’s wedding.
No restraints surrounded her.
The locked doors and legal documents were enough.
A clinic aide had been told Lydia was dangerous and must not leave.
Ortiz opened the room after an independent physician spoke with her.
Lydia looked at Emma first.
“You have your father’s eyes.”
Emma began crying.
Then Clara appeared on a secure hospital video call.
Lydia touched the screen.
“My little girl.”
Clara could not speak for several seconds.
Eleanor had told Lydia that Clara died from complications after a childhood illness.
Later, Victor showed her forged articles claiming Daniel married another woman and that Clara wanted no contact.
Every few years, they changed the story to match whatever Lydia remembered.
The basement archive contained Thomas Whitmore’s original ledger.
It documented unauthorized trials of vaporized sedatives inside hotel rooms.
Eleanor had approved the program because the compound increased deep sleep and made the company’s beds appear more effective.
Several guests experienced memory loss and respiratory emergencies.
Lydia demanded the trials stop.
The laboratory explosion occurred the night before she planned to testify.
Thomas helped Lydia escape the fire but lost contact after Victor’s private ambulance intercepted her.
Thomas spent years searching while Eleanor convinced him Lydia had fled with company secrets.
By the time he learned the truth, he was dying.

He built the master bedroom’s independent archive as a final safeguard.
The room Eleanor used to erase Clara had been designed by Thomas to expose her.
