The Fall Beneath the Crystal Chandelier

Chapter 01 - The Fall Beneath the Crystal Chandelier

The Sterling estate glittered as if nothing ugly had ever happened there.

Crystal chandeliers reflected across white marble floors. Lawyers, directors, and reporters crowded the lower hall, waiting for the late founder’s private trust announcement. At the center of the room stood Ryan Sterling, newly appointed chief executive of Sterling Aeronautics.

His wife, Grace, was eight months pregnant.

She wore a simple gold dress and kept one hand beneath her stomach as she climbed the curved staircase toward the family archive. Ryan had asked her to wait downstairs, but a handwritten note had been delivered to her table:

IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR FATHER, COME ALONE.

At the upper landing waited Vanessa Ward.

Vanessa wore a silver evening gown and a look of pure panic. Newspapers had called her Ryan’s secret lover for months. She had once been engaged to him before Grace entered his life.

“Grace, stop,” Vanessa said. “The railing—”

A sharp crack echoed through the hall.

The polished handrail shifted beneath Grace’s palm.

She lost her balance.

Vanessa lunged forward, catching the edge of Grace’s sleeve but not enough to hold her. Grace slid down several steps and landed on the wide carpeted platform below.

Ryan reached her first.

He dropped to his knees and gathered her carefully into his arms.

“Call an ambulance!”

Grace struggled to breathe.

Vanessa remained frozen at the top of the staircase with one hand extended.

Ryan looked up at her, grief turning instantly to fury.

“You touched her.”

“I tried to save her.”

Guests began recording.

At the edge of the crowd, Ryan’s mother, Eleanor Sterling, covered her mouth and whispered, “I knew that woman would destroy this family.”

Grace’s fingers closed around Ryan’s wrist.

“She didn’t push me.”

Ryan bent closer.

Grace looked toward the chandelier above them.

“The camera,” she whispered. “Check the chandelier camera.”

Then she pressed something cold into his hand.

A small brass key.

Engraved on it was the symbol of Ellis Engineering—the company that had co-founded Sterling Aeronautics thirty years earlier before its owner vanished and every share was transferred to the Sterling family.

Grace had carried the key since childhood.

She had never known what it opened.
