The Archive Beneath the Staircase
Chapter 05 - The Archive Beneath the Staircase
Grace returned to the estate against medical advice two days later.
She moved slowly, accompanied by Ryan, a nurse, and Detective Ortiz.
The two brass keys fit into a circular lock behind the staircase panel.
When turned together, a narrow door opened beneath the landing.
Inside was a climate-controlled archive untouched for decades.
Blueprints covered the walls.
Metal cabinets contained patent records, employee ledgers, and sealed letters.
At the center stood a small aircraft data recorder connected to the chandelier camera system.
Samuel had designed the hidden archive because he believed digital records could be rewritten by whoever controlled the company.
One letter was addressed to his future child.
Grace opened it with trembling hands.
Samuel wrote that he and Arthur discovered a fatal flaw in a military navigation contract. Arthur wanted to hide it until after a major government sale.
Samuel refused.
He transferred his shares into a trust for his unborn daughter and planned to report the flaw.
The night before his flight, he gave Grace’s mother one key and placed the second inside the prototype aircraft.
If Samuel disappeared, both keys would be required to open the archive.
Grace looked at the key recovered from Paul’s truck.
“How did he get the second one?”
The data recorder held the answer.
Samuel’s test aircraft did not crash into Lake Briar.
It landed at a private Sterling airstrip three hours after the company reported it missing.
Security footage showed Arthur Sterling and a young Eleanor waiting beside the runway.

Samuel stepped from the plane alive.
Then the recording ended.
