The Hidden Camera

Chapter 03 - The Hidden Camera

The chandelier camera stored footage on magnetic tape rather than the estate’s digital network.

Marcus found the recorder behind a false panel in the archive.

The tape showed Grace approaching the upper landing.

Vanessa stepped from the archive doorway and pointed toward the railing.

Before either woman touched it, a gloved hand appeared through a service opening beneath the stairs and pulled a thin wire.

The weakened railing shifted outward.

Vanessa grabbed Grace’s sleeve.

The fabric tore.

She had not pushed Grace.

She had tried to save her.

The person beneath the stairs escaped through a passage used by household staff.

The camera captured only a black sleeve and a signet ring.

Ryan enlarged the image.

The ring displayed the Sterling crest.

Every family director received one.

Eleanor wore hers at the gala.

So did Ryan’s uncle, Thomas Sterling, and three board members.

At the hospital, Ryan told Grace the truth.

She closed her eyes.

“I knew Vanessa was frightened, not angry.”

“How?”

“She said my father’s name.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Your father was David Reed.”

“That is what my adoption papers say.”

Grace had grown up believing her biological parents died in a highway accident. Her adoptive mother gave her the brass key without explanation.

The name Ellis meant nothing until Vanessa whispered it before the fall.

Grace opened the small necklace at her throat.

Inside was a faded photograph of a young man beside a silver aircraft prototype.

Ryan recognized him.

Samuel Ellis.

Sterling Aeronautics’ missing co-founder.

The man standing beside him was Ryan’s late grandfather, Arthur Sterling.

On the back, written in blue ink, were seven words:

FOR MY DAUGHTER GRACE — THE COMPANY REMEMBERS.

Ryan stared at his wife.

If the photograph was genuine, Grace was Samuel Ellis’s daughter.

Under the original partnership charter, Samuel’s direct heir owned half the company.

The staircase fall was not merely an attack on Ryan’s wife.

It was an attempt to prevent an heir from reaching the archive before the trust announcement.
