The Mother at Briar Lake

Chapter 10 - The Mother at Briar Lake

Grace agreed to meet Elena at an abandoned boathouse near Briar Lake.

Police watched from a distance.

Elena arrived wearing a dark coat and carrying a metal case.

She was sixty-one, with silver in her hair and the same blue eyes as Grace.

Mother and daughter stood several feet apart.

Grace had imagined this moment all her life.

None of the imagined versions included police radios and a corporate trust.

“Did you cut the tape?” Grace asked.

“Yes.”

“Did you move the wire?”

“No.”

Elena removed a reel of film from the case.

She had cut the tape to protect a hidden witness.

The missing footage showed twelve-year-old Olivia Cross entering the service passage.

Olivia was Nathan’s daughter.

She discovered her father adjusting the railing and tried to stop him. In panic, she pulled the wrong wire, shifting the loosened section directly into Grace’s path.

Nathan saw what happened.

He chose to continue the plan and blame Thomas.

Elena removed the footage because she feared Nathan would hurt Olivia if the girl became a witness.

Grace’s anger sharpened.

“You hid evidence after I fell.”

“I was trying to protect a child.”

“You protected her by leaving her with the man who used her.”

Elena lowered her head.

She had spent decades making decisions through fear.

Grace understood the pattern too well.

Detective Ortiz placed Olivia under immediate protection.

The girl confirmed Elena’s account.

Nathan had brought her to the estate because he could not find childcare during the gala.

He told her the wire controlled decorative lights.

When Grace fell, Olivia realized the truth.

Nathan threatened to send her mother to prison if she spoke.

The final mystery remained.

Who told Nathan to delay Grace’s trust signature until after birth?
