The Company Changes Hands

Chapter 12 - The Company Changes Hands
At midnight, the Ellis Employee Trust activated.
Forty-nine percent of Sterling Aeronautics transferred to employees and retired workers. Grace retained one percent as Samuel’s heir, enough to protect the original safety charter but not control the company alone.
The Sterling family lost its majority.
Financial markets panicked.
Commentators predicted collapse.
Instead, employees elected engineers, factory workers, and flight crews to the new board.
Vanessa presented evidence of stolen pension funds.
Eleanor and Thomas had moved millions into private development accounts.
Thomas was charged with financial crimes unrelated to the staircase.
Eleanor faced fraud and conspiracy charges.
Ryan resigned as chief executive and applied to the new board like any other candidate.
They did not choose him.
A veteran engineer named Maria Chen became interim CEO.
Ryan accepted a role leading public safety compliance at a lower salary.
Reporters called it humiliation.
He called it correction.
Grace remained in the hospital during the first meeting because contractions returned.
Vanessa sat beside her.
“I am sorry I sent you upstairs.”
“I am sorry everyone believed the worst of you so easily.”
Vanessa looked away.
“They believed what I had helped them practice.”
For years, she had enjoyed exclusive access, public attention, and her status as Ryan’s former fiancée. She had mocked Grace privately as an outsider.
Changing sides did not erase that.
Grace did not offer instant forgiveness.

She offered a chair.
Sometimes justice began with refusing to repeat the exclusion that created the harm.
