Claire’s Missing Years

Chapter 14 - Claire’s Missing Years
Claire moved into a small apartment near Olivia.
She did not assume they would live together.
Mother and daughter attended counseling.
Some sessions focused on Victor.
Others focused on the false cancer death.
Claire had allowed Olivia to visit a hospital room where another woman lay behind a curtain while staff told her to say goodbye.
The cruelty of that memory was difficult to name.
“I thought a complete ending would keep you from looking,” Claire said.
“It did not keep me safe. It made me doubt every memory.”
Claire accepted the anger.
She provided records of every place she hid, every attempt to contact Olivia, and every moment fear changed her mind.
The records did not excuse her.
They gave shape to the absence.
Olivia learned that forgiveness was not one decision.
Some days she called Claire Mom.

Some days she used Claire.
Both were honest.
